Application and Selection

Candidates should be aware that, due to market forces and the limited number of places available on the course, those who are fluent in a language other than English and those with a background in the tourism industry are more likely to be offered a place on the course first.

Depending on what type of work is being undertaken, tourist guides will charge a range of fees. As an example for ‘mainstream’ guiding work, in English, in 2012-2013 freelance London Blue Badge guides negotiated fees in the range of £136 - £158 per half day and £211 - £232 per full day.

Driver guides and those with second languages generally charge a higher fee.

Pre-entry test
All applicants will be asked to sit a pre-entry general knowledge test on Wednesday, 22nd February 2012 in the evening. Shortly after the pre-entry test, selected candidates will be informed in writing and asked to attend an interview.

Interview
Interviews will take place during the period of 8th March and 23rd March 2012 during the day. Offers of a place on the course will be sent by out by Friday 30th March 2012.

At interview candidates will need to demonstrate an outgoing personality, smart appearance, good general knowledge, a genuine interest and concern for people and the motivation to work as an independent professional. In addition candidates will be asked questions on their organizational skills, flexibility, teamwork and reliability.

Acceptance for 2012 course
Candidates' acceptance letters (together with 50% of the fee) should be received by Thursday, 12th April 2012 in time for clearance before the Induction weekend on 21st and 22nd April, 2012.
